Bipartisan Discussion

Purpose

USA-Independents started during the 2024 election cycle when an average couple got tired of - frankly EVERYTHING. Let me be clear - I have never run for public office and have no intention of ever running for public office. I just struggle to believe it's as hard as it seems to be to express ideas, talk about them, make them better, and reach common sense consensus.

This site will be dedicated to offering ideas related to policies and politics in the United States of America. It will be a place where the "silent majority" - political Independents and independent thinkers of all political parties can participate in the positive and productive development of "things" that can bring citizens closer together.

Content will grow over time and will evolve -

Term Limits

We should urge Congress to pass term limits for Representatives and Senators

  • A Representative shall only be allowed to be elected for 12 years.
  • If appointed to complete a predecessor's term, those years of service do not count toward the term limit.
  • Generally speaking this means a US Representative can be elected six times or three times depending upon how long their term runs.
  • Five States have four year terms
  • A Senator shall only be allowed to be elected for 12 years.
  • Two six year terms

All existing US Representatives and Senators will be grandfathered in - term limits will not apply to them unless they lose office and are re-elected in the future or if they move from the House to the Senate or vice versa.

Insights

  • Term limits will likely never be introduced as law as the people whose terms are being limited would have to pass the law. Hence the exception for sitting Representatives and Senators.
  • A person could still spend "a career" representing their constituents by serving 12 years in the House and 12 years in the Senate.
  • Potential for saving taxpayer money by revisiting the retirement benefits.

Voter ID

Guiding Principles

Every US Citizen who is legally eligible to vote should be able to vote.

This is a really insightful article. I particularly agree with the points about term limits - we definitely need fresh perspectives in Congress.

Great balanced approach to these issues. It's refreshing to see solutions that aren't extreme on either end of the political spectrum.

The voter ID section could use more detail, but I appreciate the guiding principle that every eligible citizen should be able to vote.
